CHILDCARE VOUCHER SCHEMES

The Childcare Voucher Scheme has proven to be the most popular of the salary sacrifice schemes. Current estimates suggest that 75% of the working population will have access to a scheme by the end of 2008.

Employees with parental responsibilities are eligible for up to £243 per month (£55 per week) in childcare vouchers, free of tax and national insurance. This means savings of up to £75 per month for a basic-rate taxpayer and up to £100 per month for a higher-rate taxpayer. If both parents are working, they can both take part in the scheme and double the saving.

As a salary sacrifice scheme, employers enjoy savings too; typically 12.8% of the value of the vouchers issued (employer's NI).
